How to Choose a Massage Gun

Five specs explain most of the price difference. Here is what each one means in practice.

1. Amplitude: how deep each stroke goes

Amplitude is how far the head travels on each stroke. Full-size Theraguns move 16 mm; compact guns are usually around 10–12 mm. A longer stroke feels deeper; a shorter one feels lighter and buzzier.

2. Stall force: how hard you can press

Stall force is how much pressure the motor takes before it stops. Not every brand publishes it, so compare it only where it is stated. If you like to lean into a massage, a higher figure matters.

3. Noise

Compare noise only where the brand gives a decibel figure, and check whether it is one number or a range across speeds. On our list, Renpho states 45 dB or less and Hyperice states 48 dB.

4. Weight, handle and attachments

Weight and handle shape decide whether you can reach your own back without strain; minis weigh about 1 lb and premium models over 3 lb. For attachments, a few useful shapes beat a long list: a soft head for areas near bone, a ball for general use and a small head for tight spots. Check what is in the box and what is sold separately.

5. Battery and charging

Read battery claims as best-case figures; Therabody, for example, tests at the lowest speed. If you travel, USB-C charging means one less charger to carry.

Using one sensibly: Bob and Brad advise short sessions on muscle (about 10–20 seconds per spot) and avoiding bone. Therabody says not to use a massage gun on the face, head, throat, neck or genitals, and to ask a medical professional first if you have a recent injury or surgery, take blood-thinning medication, are pregnant or have another condition. Follow your device’s own instructions.

How We Picked

How this guide was researched, and what we did not do.

We shortlisted current models from established brands and compared them on the specs the brands publish: amplitude, stall force, speeds, weight, battery, stated noise, attachments, warranty and list price. Facts come from each manufacturer’s product page, checked on the date at the top of this page; where a brand doesn’t state a spec, we say so rather than estimate. We have not tested these devices for this guide, and brands cannot pay for placement. Read our review process and affiliate disclosure.
