How to Choose Resistance Bands

Pick the type first; it decides what you can do with the band. Then check resistance, latex and safety.

1. Match the band type to the job

  • Tube bands with handles clip onto handles, ankle straps and a door anchor, so they replace a lot of gym exercises. You can clip several onto one handle for more resistance.
  • Mini loops (9–12 in) go around your legs for warm-ups, lateral steps and glute work.
  • Fabric loops do the same job in a wider, woven band; Rogue says its Hip Band’s grip strips keep it from sliding or rolling.
  • Long loop bands (about 40 in) are for pull-up assistance, stretching and heavier pulling.
  • Flat bands have no handles; some, like TheraBand CLX, have built-in loops to hold instead.

2. Read pound ratings carefully

A pound rating describes the pull at a certain stretch, not a fixed weight, and brands calculate it differently. Bodylastics adds every band in a set together and doubles it; Rogue gives one figure per band at 100% stretch (twice its resting length). Compare numbers within one brand, not across brands.

3. Check for latex

Most rubber bands are natural rubber latex. If that is a concern, choose bands labelled latex-free, such as TheraBand CLX, or a fabric band like Rogue’s Hip Band.

4. Inspect and anchor every time

Brands advise checking bands before each use and replacing any that are nicked, cracked or torn. Anchor only to something sturdy (Bodylastics says to put its door anchor on the hinge side of a locked door), and never let a stretched band snap back toward your face. TheraBand also recommends eye protection.

5. Store them well

Keep bands somewhere cool and dry, out of direct sunlight and away from sharp edges. Unhook them from anchors after use.

How We Picked

How this guide was researched, and what we did not do.

We shortlisted current bands and sets from established brands and compared them on what each brand publishes: band type, what is included, resistance, material, length, warranty and price. Facts come from each manufacturer’s product, FAQ and care pages, checked on the date at the top of this page. We have not tested these bands for this guide, and brands cannot pay for placement.
