How to Choose Your First Running Shoes

Five things matter more than the brand name. Use them to narrow the list, then let comfort decide.

1. Neutral or stability?

Most new runners do well in a neutral shoe. Stability shoes add guidance features (Brooks calls its version GuideRails) that help keep excess movement in check. They are often preferred by runners whose feet roll inward a lot, which tends to show as extra wear on the inner edge of old shoes. If you are unsure, a running store can watch you jog and let you try both.

2. Cushioning you find comfortable

Beginners usually enjoy moderate to high cushioning, especially on pavement. There is no single “correct” amount. Running retailer Fleet Feet advises that, among shoes that fit, the most comfortable one is usually the right one, and that a running shoe should feel good straight away rather than after a break-in period.

3. Heel-to-toe drop

Drop is the height difference between the heel and the forefoot, in millimetres. Many everyday trainers sit around 8–12 mm. Low-drop shoes (0–6 mm) feel noticeably different, so if you switch to one, build up your running gradually.

4. Fit and width

  • Leave about a thumb’s width (roughly 1 cm) between your longest toe and the end of the shoe.
  • Try shoes on later in the day, with the socks you will run in.
  • Your heel should not slip, and the widest part of your foot should not press on the sides. Many models come in wide sizes.
  • Running-shoe sizing differs between brands, so many runners end up half a size bigger than their everyday shoes.

5. Road or trail

Road shoes are lighter and smoother on pavement and treadmills. Trail shoes add grippier lugs and tougher uppers for dirt, mud and rocks. If you mostly run on sidewalks and park paths, a road shoe is the right start.

Tracking progress: a watch or band can log your runs, but you do not need one to start. If you want one, our fitness tracker buying guide explains what to look for.

Starting out: walk-run intervals and a few short sessions a week give your body time to adapt. If you have a heart, joint or foot condition, check with a healthcare professional before you begin (see our medical disclaimer).

How We Picked

How this guide was researched, and what we did not do.

We shortlisted current models that running retailers and brands position as comfortable daily trainers, then compared them on the specs that matter most to new runners: support type, cushioning, heel-to-toe drop, weight, width options and list price. Specs come from each manufacturer’s product pages and were checked on the date shown at the top of this page. We have not run in these shoes for this guide, and we do not accept payment for placement. Read our review process and affiliate disclosure.
