How to Choose a Weighted Blanket

Weight, size and fabric matter most. Here is how to get each one right.

1. Choose the weight: about 10% of your body weight

Brands suggest starting at roughly 10% of your body weight (a 150 lb person: about 15 lb). Bearaby says to choose the lower weight if you fall between sizes. Heavier is not better: it should feel snug, not restrictive.

2. Size it to the sleeper, not the bed

Most weighted blankets are made to cover one person and are not meant to hang over the sides of the bed. If two people will share, choose a bed-size option such as Baloo’s King or Gravity’s 90×90 in, and pick the weight for the lighter sleeper.

3. Fabric and heat

Weighted blankets can feel warm. Breathable cotton, TENCEL, bamboo and open knits suit hot sleepers better than minky or polyester covers. Bearaby recommends its open-knit Tree Napper for hot sleepers.

4. Washing

Check what is actually washable. Some blankets go in the machine whole (Baloo, Bearaby); others only have a washable cover (Gravity’s inner blanket is hand-wash only; Hush’s insert is spot-clean). A wet weighted blanket is very heavy, so read the care label before washing.

5. Safety

Never use a weighted blanket on or near a baby. Brands set their own minimum ages for children, so follow the label and ask a pediatrician. Adults with a medical condition should check with a healthcare professional first.

How We Picked

How this guide was researched, and what we did not do.

We shortlisted current weighted blankets from established brands and compared them on what each brand publishes: weights, sizes, fill, cover fabric, washing instructions, trial and returns, warranty and price. Facts come from each manufacturer’s product and policy pages, checked on the date at the top of this page; where a brand’s pages disagree, we say so. We have not tested these blankets for this guide, and brands cannot pay for placement. Read our review process and affiliate disclosure.
