How to Choose a Memory Foam Mattress

Firmness, layer stack, cooling, certifications, trial terms and your existing bed base are the six things worth checking before you order.

Memory foam mattresses look similar in photos and differ a lot in the details. Here is what to compare, using the picks on this page as examples.

1. Settle firmness first

A mattress that is too soft or too firm is hard to correct later, so start there. These picks list different feels: Leesa lists medium comfort, Saatva lists medium, Nolah lists medium-firm and Amerisleep lists medium. The WinkBeds GravityLux is sold in Soft, Medium and Firm versions, so you pick the feel when you order.

2. Read the layer stack

Ask what the comfort layers are made of and how thick they are. The Leesa Original lists a 2" GreenFlex BioFoam layer, a 2" memory foam layer and a 6" support foam, while the Saatva Contour5 lists a 3" memory foam layer over a support base. In general, thicker comfort layers give a slower, more contouring feel.

3. See where cooling is built in

Cooling shows up in different places: WinkBeds puts gel-infused foam in the cover, Nolah uses copper-infused Cool Contouring Foam, Amerisleep lists Bio-Pur® foam with HIVE® technology for airflow, and Saatva lists adaptive cooling. If you sleep warm, check where the cooling sits rather than assuming it is included.

4. Check certifications and materials

CertiPUR-US® and GREENGUARD Gold are the certifications listed on these pages. Leesa says all its foams are CertiPUR-US® certified and describes a chemical-free, fiberglass-free fire barrier, while Nolah lists GREENGUARD Gold certified and fiberglass-free. Certification wording comes from the manufacturer, so read the brand page for the current wording.

5. Weigh the trial and the warranty

Trial terms differ across these picks: Amerisleep lists a 100-night trial, WinkBeds lists 120 nights, and Saatva lists a 365-night home trial, while Leesa lists a 365-night trial with free shipping among its features. Check who pays return shipping and whether the warranty is a limited one or a full replacement, such as the WinkBeds full replacement lifetime warranty.

6. Match the mattress to your base

Nolah says to use the mattress on any flat surface with slats no more than 5.5 inches apart and lists compatibility with adjustable bases. Saatva lists a mattress foundation or box spring plus a bunkie board. Check the base you already own before ordering, and follow the manufacturer’s setup instructions.
